Finding your friends on YouTube:

YouTube has always been a place for you to share and enjoy videos with family and friends. Soon, we’ll be making it even easier for you to find people you know on the site. We’ll start by launching a “You may know these people” suggestions box on the homepage over the next few weeks that shows you the YouTube channels of people who might be your acquaintances, and lets you easily connect and subscribe to them.

How will we make the suggestions? If you’ve logged in to YouTube and sent a video to a friend’s email address, or if you have your YouTube account linked to a Gmail account, we will use this information to help identify your friends who already have YouTube channels. You’ll only see channels whose owners have allowed themselves to be found by others who have their email address.

Want to see if you’ve previously allowed your channel to be found by others who have your email address, or want to change your settings? Just log in and visit the “Privacy” section of My Account. Look for the checkbox at the top that says “Let others find my channel on YouTube if they have my email address.”

Time Warner, YouTube ink distribution pact

This was originally posted at ZDNet’s Between the Lines.

Time Warner and YouTube said Wednesday that they have signed an online video distribution deal.

Under the pact, YouTube will distribute Time Warner short-form video content, including movie clips, television shows, and news. Time Warner properties–Warner Bros. and Turner Broadcasting System–will program YouTube videos via an embeddable player.

According to a statement, YouTube will get access to CNN news, the Cartoon Network, and shows such as “Gossip Girl.” Time Warner video will appear across Google properties. Time Warner can also create separate channels on YouTube and sell ad time. The two parties will split ad revenue.

Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes said the YouTube deal was a good way to monetize short-form content.

The deal appears to be a win-win. YouTube gets more professional content and Time Warner is allowed to sell ads and control channels.

YouTube has close-up video of plane-chopper crash

A video that shows most of the midair collision between a plane and helicopter over the Hudson River last Saturday is available on YouTube.

An Italian tourist was trying to get accustomed to a new video camera during a tour boat cruise and focused his lens on the helicopter. The plane comes into view from behind the helicopter and then appears to clip the helicopter with its right wing.

Before the videographer stops shooting, the plane is recorded flipping over and apparently breaking up in a cloud of debris while both aircraft plunge toward the water. Be advised: the scenes may be upsetting to some.

NBC’s report from Thursday can be seen below. A separate report with the same footage is here.
