Chris Brown sentenced to 5 years probation in Rihanna assault

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — Pop singer Chris Brown was sentenced Tuesday to serve five years probation and more than 1,400 hours in “labor-oriented service” for assaulting his pop star girlfriend, Rihanna.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg said in the sentencing she wants to see Brown conduct “actual physical labor, as opposed to some type of community service.”

The sentencing was delayed earlier this month because documents detailing Brown’s proposed community service plan in Virginia, where he maintains a legal residence and wants to serve his sentence, had not arrived in time for Schnegg to review them.

Brown’s probation will be overseen by the state of California, the judge said.

He must also complete domestic violence counseling.

Google patches severe Chrome vulnerabilities

Google has fixed two high-severity vulnerabilities in the stable version of its Chrome browser that could have let an attacker remotely take over a person’s computer.

With one attack on Google’s V8 JavaScript engine, malicious JavaScript on a Web site could let an attacker gain access to sensitive data or run arbitrary code on the computer, Google said in a blog post Tuesday. With the other, a page with XML-encoded information could cause a browser tab crash that could let an attacker run arbitrary code within a Chrome protected area called the sandbox.

Chrome 2.0.172.43 (click to download for Windows) fixes the issues and another medium-severity issue. Once Chrome is installed, it retrieves updates automatically and applies them when people restart the browser.

Google won’t release details of the vulnerabilities until “a majority of users are up to date with the fix,” Engineering Program Manager Jonathan Conradt said in the blog post.

BREAKING: Plane down at Rockaway Townsquare mall

Authorities said the single-engine Cessna made an emergency landing in the area between the mall’s JC Penney store and the Toys R Us store. The pilot and a passenger exited the aircraft and are uninjured.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, Morris County Emergency Management, Picatinny Arsenal and Rockaway Township emergency response units are on the scene.

The plane reportedly was en route to Essex County Airport when it encountered problems and was forced down.

An eyewitness, Maciej Andrejczyn of Byram, described the pilot’s landing as a “controlled crash.”

Andrejczyn said he was standing outside the mall and saw the plane heading toward the mall. He said the aircraft’s approach was silent — he did not hear any engine noises as the plane flew toward the mall.

The Cessna struck several trees before reaching the mall parking lot, Andrejczyn said, where it bounced, losing a wheel and spun around before coming to rest on its nose. The plane did not strike any cars in the parking lot, he said.

“I would definitely call it a controlled crash,” Andrejczyn said.

Mobile ‘biochar’ machine to work the fields

An ancient technique to fertilize soil by creating charcoal from plant waste is being revived to tackle some of today’s environmental problems.

The latest company to pursue manmade charcoal, called biochar, is Biochar Systems, which has developed a biochar-making machine that can be pulled by a pickup truck. Two customers–a North Carolina farm and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management–will be begin testing the units this fall.

The unit, called the Biochar 1000, is designed to convert woody biomass, such as agricultural or forestry waste, into biochar, a black, porous, and fine-grained charcoal that can be used as a fertilizer. It uses pyrolysis–slowly burning biomass in a low-oxygen chamber–to treat 1,000 pounds of biomass per hour, yielding 250 pounds of biochar.

The Biochar 1000 converts agricultural wastes to charcoal, which is then added to soil, a process that enriches soil and removes carbon from air.

U.K. government eyes sanctions for file sharers

The U.K. government has made new proposals that would see Internet users disconnected if they are suspected of illicit file-sharing.

The proposals (PDF) were announced on Tuesday by Lord Mandelson’s Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). They arrive in the middle of the department’s own public consultation on legislation on the misuse of peer-to-peer (P2P) technology, which is scheduled to end in September.

“Our thinking on the process supporting the objectives and the obligations [of the consultation] has developed, and we thought it would be helpful to share these thoughts with stakeholders at this point, so that they can take them into account when responding to the consultation,” the government said in a statement.

The new proposals make two major additions to the initial plans. The first is a new sanction against illicit file sharers, which calls on the ISP to suspend the suspected subscriber’s account. Lord Carter discounted this measure as unnecessarily harsh in his Digital Britain report, which kicked off the P2P consultation in June. However, the government now says it is “considering the case for adding suspension of accounts into the list of measures that could be imposed.”
