BREAKING: Plane down at Rockaway Townsquare mall

Authorities said the single-engine Cessna made an emergency landing in the area between the mall’s JC Penney store and the Toys R Us store. The pilot and a passenger exited the aircraft and are uninjured.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, Morris County Emergency Management, Picatinny Arsenal and Rockaway Township emergency response units are on the scene.

The plane reportedly was en route to Essex County Airport when it encountered problems and was forced down.

An eyewitness, Maciej Andrejczyn of Byram, described the pilot’s landing as a “controlled crash.”

Andrejczyn said he was standing outside the mall and saw the plane heading toward the mall. He said the aircraft’s approach was silent — he did not hear any engine noises as the plane flew toward the mall.

The Cessna struck several trees before reaching the mall parking lot, Andrejczyn said, where it bounced, losing a wheel and spun around before coming to rest on its nose. The plane did not strike any cars in the parking lot, he said.

“I would definitely call it a controlled crash,” Andrejczyn said.

Helicopter in Hudson River crash not initially visible on radar, federal officials say

HOBOKEN — Federal safety officials investigating a midair collision over the Hudson River changed their account of the accident on a key point today, saying an air tour helicopter struck by a small plane wasn’t initially visible on radar to an air traffic controller handling the plane.

The National Transportation Safety Board had previously said the controller failed to warn the plane’s pilot of the potential for a collision with several aircraft in its path, including the helicopter, before handing off responsibility for the plane to another airport.

YouTube has close-up video of plane-chopper crash

A video that shows most of the midair collision between a plane and helicopter over the Hudson River last Saturday is available on YouTube.

An Italian tourist was trying to get accustomed to a new video camera during a tour boat cruise and focused his lens on the helicopter. The plane comes into view from behind the helicopter and then appears to clip the helicopter with its right wing.

Before the videographer stops shooting, the plane is recorded flipping over and apparently breaking up in a cloud of debris while both aircraft plunge toward the water. Be advised: the scenes may be upsetting to some.

NBC’s report from Thursday can be seen below. A separate report with the same footage is here.

Air traffic controllers suspended over Hudson collision – The CNN Wire

Posted: 07:57 PM ET

(CNN) — The Federal Aviation Administration has suspended two air traffic controllers over Saturday’s collision of two aircraft over the Hudson that killed nine people, a spokeswoman said Thursday.

The controller handling the flight of a Piper fixed-wing plane carrying three people “was involved in apparently inappropriate conversations on the telephone at the time of the accident,” said spokeswoman Laura Brown in a written statement.

In addition, “the supervisor was not present in the building as required,” she said.

“While we have no reason to believe at this time that these actions contributed to the accident, this kind of conduct is unacceptable and we have placed the employees on administrative leave and have begun disciplinary proceedings,” she said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is working with the FAA in investigating the Piper’s collision with a sightseeing helicopter that was carrying five Italian tourists and a pilot.

No one aboard either aircraft survived the crash.
